North Star by Mike Hamren

Note: Mike was kind enough to give his "North Star" design to the faceting community. I am sure he would be glad to hear from anybody that cuts his design. Some of you may notice some similarity to my "Tic Tac" design. Mike cut the "Tic Tac" and liked it and was inspired to create his "North Star" design. Thanks for the design Mike…. Jeff

North Star by Mike Hamren

Mike Hamren - Cutting Remarks

The stone was cut from Pink Nigerian Tourmaline (supplied by Gram Faceting), weighs 2.4 ct, measures 8mm wide x 5.5mm deep.

Cutter's Notes: Cut in R.I. 1.62 to 1.83 (90.4%) without changes. To cut this in Quartz (93.2%), just subtract 0.5 degrees from P1 and P2 (42.5 and 40.5 respectively).

This cuts with no big surprises. If you don't have the rough to meet P1, P2, you can cut P1, P3 to center point, then P2, P4 girdle to meet. Care must be taken when cutting in P5, it's easy to cut through meet point. It takes a little work to keep the C1, C2, C3, C4 meet point sharp on the crown. The Table can be omitted on a small stone.
